Paintless dent repair (PDR) removes dents from a vehicle's body panels by massaging the metal back to its original shape from behind the panel with specialised tools — without sanding, filling, priming or repainting the surface. The paint remains completely undisturbed throughout the process.

PDR works because automotive sheet metal is flexible enough to be reshaped when pressure is applied gradually and precisely from the reverse side of the panel. The technique preserves the vehicle’s original factory paint finish, which is both the strongest and the most colour-accurate paint the vehicle will ever have.

How PDR works

Paintless dent repair uses metal rods and picks inserted behind the panel through existing access points — holes, window channels or door openings — to reach the back of the dented area. The technician applies controlled upward pressure at specific points on the dent while watching the surface under reflection lighting that makes the dent’s exact shape and depth visible.

The process works in graduated stages: the metal is moved incrementally from the perimeter of the dent inward, reducing the dent profile until the surface is flat. Where behind-panel access is limited — some roof panels, or areas near frame welds — a glue-pull technique applies controlled outward force from the paint side using a low-temperature adhesive system that releases without damaging the finish.

The panel returns to its original profile with no filler, no primer and no colour matching — the factory paint surface is intact from edge to edge.

Which dents PDR can fix

PDR repairs dents where the paint surface is intact and the metal has not been permanently stretched or sharply creased. Common candidates:

Door dings

The most frequent PDR repair. Contact from adjacent vehicles in car parks produces shallow, rounded dents that PDR removes completely in most cases.

Hail damage

Multiple dents across hood, roof, trunk and panels. PDR is the standard method for hail because it handles many dents over large areas without repainting.

Minor collision dents

Low-speed impacts where the paint is undamaged — parking lot knocks, slow fender benders, light rear-end contact.

Large panel dents

Single dents in open panel areas from falling objects. A large dent in the middle of a hood or door is often more efficiently repaired by PDR than by filling and repainting.

PDR limitations

Paintless dent repair is not the right repair for every dent. PDR cannot fix:

  • Dents with cracked or chipped paint at the impact point — the paint must be intact for PDR to be a complete repair.
  • Sharp creases where the metal has been folded rather than dented — creased metal cannot be returned to the factory profile without paint work.
  • Dents with stretched metal — impact points where the metal has thinned leave a high spot PDR cannot remove.
  • Areas without tool access — some structural zones offer no path for tool insertion or glue-pulling.
  • Rust-compromised panels — panels with rust beneath the surface cannot be PDR’d safely.

A qualified technician assesses each dent before committing to PDR. Attempting it on an ineligible dent produces a worse result than traditional repair. Where PDR is not viable we perform conventional dent repair using automotive-grade filler and factory colour-matched paint.

PDR is faster, less expensive and better for resale value — when it is the right method. The deciding factors are whether the paint is intact and whether the metal has been stretched.

The correct choice depends entirely on the dent. PDR is not universally better than traditional repair — it is better for the dent types it addresses. A sharp crease with paint damage needs traditional repair; attempting PDR there produces an inferior result to correct filler-and-paint work.

PDR cost and timeline

PDR costs $75–$150 per standard door ding and $150–$300 for larger or more complex dents. Hail damage across multiple panels is quoted per vehicle based on dent count — most hail jobs land between $400 and $1,200 depending on severity.

Most single-dent repairs are finished in one to three hours. Hail repairs take one to two days. PDR is significantly faster than traditional repair because there is no paint cure time.

Common questions

Is paintless dent repair permanent?

Yes — correctly performed PDR is permanent. The metal is physically reshaped to its original position, and there is no filler or surface treatment that can shrink back over time. A PDR repair done by an experienced technician on an eligible dent will not reappear.

Does PDR work on aluminium panels?

Yes, but with an adjusted technique. Aluminium work-hardens faster than steel — it resists reshaping more aggressively and can crack if force is applied too quickly, so it needs slower, more graduated pressure and tools designed for the material. Not every PDR technician is trained on aluminium; confirm experience with your specific panel material before booking.

Will insurance cover PDR for hail damage?

Hail damage PDR is covered under the comprehensive portion of your policy, subject to your deductible. Comprehensive weather claims do not affect your collision rate history in Massachusetts, so if your deductible is less than the repair cost, filing is usually the right decision.
